Tanzanian professional long-distance runner, Gabriel Geay is the winner of the 2023 Boston Athletic Association (BAA) 10K men’s division.
Geay hit the finishing line ribbon with a personal-best time of 27 minutes and 49 seconds.
Previously, the Arusha-born Geay finished second at the 2023 Boston Marathon in April 2023. Apparently, he is the Tanzanian national record holder for the marathon.
This time Gabriel Geay won the 2023 B.A.A. 10K men’s division race which was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 25, 2023.
First runner up was Edwin Kurgat from Kenya who raced for 28 minutes and 1 second.
In third place came Alex Masai with 28 minutes and 9 seconds. He is also from Kenya.
It therefore means that East African athletes filled the top three slots in the BAA’s Men Division 10K racing.
Tsegay Kidanu, a runner from Ethiopia, finished fourth with a time of 28:18 and American Diego Estrada finished fifth with a time of 28:19.
In the wheelchair division, Hermin Garic of New York defended his men’s title with a time of 22:44 just inches ahead of Philadelphia’s James Senbeta.
The Boston Athletic Association said three athletes in the Para Athletics Division set world records in their respective 10 kilometers races.
They are Atsbha Gebremeskel in the Men’s T45-T46 (upper-limb impairment) with a time of 38:39; Liz Willis in the Women’s T61-T64 (lower-limb impairment) with a time of 52:30; and Massachusetts native Brian Reynolds, who won the Men’s T61-T64 race with a time of 41:09.
The race is presented by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and more than 450 runners in this year’s field raised funds for Team Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
The Boston Athletic Association said more than USD 200,000 was raised through this year’s B.A.A. 10K and more than USD 1.3 million has been raised since 2016.
The B.A.A. 10K is the second of three races in the 2023 B.A.A. Distance Medley series.
It was preceded by the B.A.A. 5K on April 15 and will conclude with the B.A.A. Half Marathon in November 12. General registration for the half marathon will open on July 10
