The United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has appointed Dr Elizabeth Maruma Mrema from Tanzania to serve as Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program.
Ms Mrema succeeds Joyce Msuya also from Tanzania who has been appointed to be Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Announcing the new appointment, the UN Secretary-General also extended his appreciation to the Director of the Corporate Services Division of UNEP, Sonja Leighton-Kone, who continues to serve as Acting Deputy Executive Director until Ms. Mrema assumes this position.
Dr Elizabeth Mrema has since 2020 served as Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) based in Montreal, Canada.
She previously served as Acting Executive Secretary of the CBD Secretariat and as Director of the Law Division at UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as Executive Secretary of the Convention on Migratory Species Secretariat based in Bonn, Germany.
She is an Alumnus of the University of Dar-es-Salaam, who at one time also served in the Ministry of Justice.
Mrs Mrema is a UDSM Alumna class of 1981 Bachelor of Laws – LLB (Hons) and Alumna of the Month for July 2020
Upon graduation Elizabeth was engaged by the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Chambers from 1981 to 31 Dec 1991.
There she worked as a legal counsel in legal matters, mostly prosecuting judicial cases on behalf of the Government.
With effect from 1984 up to 1988, she was seconded to the Centre for International Relations in Kurasini as a part-time lecturer in international law and conference diplomacy.
From 01 January 1992 Mrs Mrema has been working with the United Nations, serving in different departments and levels.
Before joining UNEP in 1994, Ms Mrema worked with Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as Senior Legal Counsel.
During her time with the Ministry, she also lectured in Public International Law and Conference Diplomacy at Tanzania’s Centre for Foreign Relations and Diplomacy.
