Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences the leading Institution of Higher Learning in East Africa

The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences is now ranking high among the top five leading institutes of higher learning on the African Continent.

MUHAS which is attached to the Muhimbili National Hospital, in Dar-es-Salaam City has just been slotted among the top 10 universities in Africa, taking position number five.

The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences is therefore the official leading institute of higher learning in East and Central Africa as of latest rankings.

This is according to the latest Times Higher Education ranking of 2023.

MUHAS as it happens, beats all other institutes of higher learning in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The Tanzania’s leading Medical School operating in Dar-es-salaam City and attached to the Muhimbili National Hospital, is ranked at position 5 on the continent as far as the latest placement is concerned.

MUHAS is listed high alongside the University of Kwazulu Natal of Durban, South Africa, the University Of Ibadan (UI) which is a public research institution in Ibadan, Nigeria and the University of Lagos also in Nigeria.

Others are the Aswan University, which is one of the top public universities in Aswan, Egypt and Ferhat Abbas University of Algeria.

At position number One is the University of Cape Town, followed by the Stellenbosch University in the second position and the University of the Witwatersrand of Johannesburg all based in South Africa.

Coming fourth is the University Of Cape Coast Of Ghana which is the topmost ranked University in both Ghana and the West African Region.

The University of Nairobi, in Kenya is at position number 16, while Makerere University of Uganda ranks at number 28. The ranking is usually based on teaching, research, research impact, innovation and international outlook.

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences also collaborates with the Harvard Chan School based in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts.

For over 35 years now the two institutions have cooperated on a number of public health research and training efforts.

A number of Tanzanian physicians, scientists, and researchers from Muhimbili have been attending degree programs and also participate in non-degree training programs or academic sabbaticals at the Harvard Chan School.

Several other training programs have been, and currently are, supported by the Fogarty International Center.
