Was Nigerian Lady Sexually Assaulted at her Hotel Room in Zanzibar ?

The Zanzibar commission for Tourism has been compelled to issue statement in response to claims that a Nigerian Lady Tourist, Zainab Oladehinde, was night raped in the Islands, a year ago but has been suffering trauma in silence.

A dispatch from the Executive Secretary for Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT), Hafsa H. Mbamba expressed shock over the allegations and promised to launch thorough investigations regarding the horrid incident.

Now aged 24, the young Nigerian lady, Zainab Oladehinde, claims to have suffered sexual assault during her stay at the Warere Beach Hotel in Zanzibar, while celebrating her 23rd Birthday in the Isles, sometimes in April 2021.

Posting on her Twitter Page, the Nigerian Tourists writes;

“It’s high time I told my horrible experience in Zanzibar as a young solo female traveler.

This incident happened a year ago in April of 2021 but I haven’t been able to talk about it cause I’ve been in therapy for a year to heal from the psychological trauma as this experience has been the most painful and traumatic experience I’ve ever faced in my entire life. In fact! I’m glad I’m still alive today to share my story…..”

MY 23rd BIRTHDAY VACATION WENT WRONG IN ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA

On the 15th of April 2021, I flew from Lagos, Nigeria to Zanzibar, Tanzania for my 23rd birthday and I was extremely excited about it. I had my reservations about going to a foreign country as a solo female traveler but none of my thoughts would have prepared me for what I eventually witnessed and experienced in Tanzania.

On getting to the hotel, I was welcomed by the staff and they showed me my room which had a pool and sea view. Now, this looked like heaven to me and I can remember being so excited because this was going to be my dream birthday holiday.

I couldn’t do much except eat dinner as I was tired from my flight and I just wanted to sleep. My itinerary the next day was to spend some time to explore the hotel whilst I settle fully into vacation mode before I’d start my tourist activities which I never got the time to do

It was a 2-day flight as we had a one day transit time in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. I arrived at my hotel  WARERE BEACH hotel in Nungwi Zanzibar on the 16th of April, 2021 in the afternoon around 4pm where I had booked a 6 I had breakfast, went to the pool and the beach which was very nice . I mingled with some Russian couples who were also lodged at the hotel and by evening time, I was already in full birthday mode as it was just a few hours to my birthday.

At around 12am, a few friends and family called to wish me a happy birthday and then I went back to my room to sleep. Few hours into my sleep, I started to feel a strange hand touching my breast. Now, this was me, sleeping naked on my bed in my hotel room with my doors locked so this was definitely a dream. I told myself and went back to sleep

Some few minutes afterwards, I started to feel my hands stroking someone’s penis. At this moment, I opened my eyes to confirm if it was actually a dream or I was in real danger.

Zainab Oledahinde

As it turned out, a man, what sleeping on her bedside and caressing her sexually. Where he materialized from, remains a mystery to date.

Did she leave her door open, accidentally? On Purpose? Or the man was in the room by default?

In fact some other reports claim that she could possibly also have known the alleged intruder and let him in.

Plus, he was filthy, or at least. Zainab claims so.

What followed is something which we cannot publish here, but can be accessed from Zainab’s twitter page.

She claims to have tried to seek help that night but both the receptionist desk and management remained unresponsive.

It was until early hours of the morning after the rapist left, that she managed to rush into other guests’ room to seek refuge.

Later that day she reported the matter at Nungwi Police Station, where according to her, the cops were less helpful, in fact they threatened her. Including ordering the lady to delete photos from her phone.

It was from the fact that she officially reported the incident to the local police that her claims have been taken serious and not the Zanzibar Commission of Tourism sets out to investigate the incident.

Response from Warere Beach?

We managed to get this post from a Facebook post, believing to be from the Hotel Management.

The Warere Beach Hotel of Nungwi Zanzibar has always ranked high, but after the Nigerian Lady’s claims, the property may need to work hard in restoring credibility among customers.
