What is the Population Trend in Tanzania?

Tanzania’s Population Census Report has just gone public. The country has nearly 62 million residents.

The new count comes at the time when the global population is being tagged at 8 billion, with China and India still topping the bill, while Nigeria leads in Africa.

The estimated average population of 60 million has always been the reference figure before the latest official data endorsed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the public function in Dodoma.

While the number didn’t get lower than the always quoted 60 million, the figure did not steer far from the previous estimates.

The World Population Review recently reported that by the end of 2020, the country’s population was estimated to be at 59.73 million.

According to the World Population Review, the country’s population is expected to reach 282.67 million at the end of the century.

What is the Population growth rate in Tanzania?

Tanzania conducted the latest National Population and Housing Census in August 2022.

Previously, a similar exercise was done in August 2012 and before that another census was conducted in 2002. The country usually counts its people every ten years.

Results from the 2012 census, indicates that Tanzania had a total population of 44,928,923 ten years ago.

That is opposed to 12,313,469 residents counted during the first post-independence census in 1967.

Therefore, the population growth rate in Tanzania stands at between 2.9 and 3.0 percent.

Around 44 percent of the population represents a group under the age of 15.

On the other hand, 35.5 percent representing a group aged 15-35, while 52.2 percent being a group aged 15-64, and 3.8 percent comprises an older group of 64 years.

The 2012 World Population Adjustment Amendment shows that children under the age of 15 accounted for 44.8 percent of the total population, with 52.0 percent being 15–64 years old and 3.1 percent aged 65 or more.

How Many People are in Africa?

The World Economic Forum reports that Africa’s population is expected to blow up to 2.6 billion by the year 2050, comprising 57 percent of the global population increase from now until then.

There are 55 countries on the continent with Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo being the largest two respectively.

Nigeria is the most populous one to date.

The current population of Nigeria is 217,891,702 as of Saturday, October 22, 2022.

Kenya: With a population of more than 47.6 million people as tabled during the country’s2019 census, Kenya is the 29th most populous country. 

Global Population trend

The population of Asia, on the other hand, will grow by 750 million to reach 5.2 billion, while the population of the Americas will increase from 1 billion to 1.2 billion.

India meanwhile is set to overtake China as the world’s most populous country, increasing to 1.7 billion people from 1.35 billion according to the World Economic Forum.

Meanwhile, Europe’s population, including all of Russia is projected to experience a slight decline, shrinking to 736 million from 745 million.

On the other hand, the Population Reference Bureau’s World Population Data Sheet, released five years ago, indicates that Earth will be home to 9.8 billion people by 2050.

This represents an increase of 31 percent in just 33 years, and it raises existing concerns about the threat of overpopulation in future.
