Aga Khan to work with East African Community in addressing Health and Education challenges in the region

The daughter of His Highness the Aga Khan, Her Highness Zahra Aga Khan has requested the East African Community to join the Aga Khan University’s mission in addressing health and education challenges in the Region.

With the Aga Khan University recording its highest achievement in East Africa by so far issuing over 2000 education merits, the daughter of His Highness the Aga Khan wants the East African Community to cooperate fully with AKU in ensuring the youth in the region are well educated.

Other education and health stakeholders in Arusha are still looking forward for the Aga Khan to realize the foundation’s goal to establish the proposed larger-than-life Aga Khan University complex in the outskirts to the city, a facility which is going to be the biggest health and education center in Africa.

To be hosted in Arusha, Tanzania the institution of higher learning known as the Aga Khan University (AKU) will particularly specialize in the fields of education and healthcare.

In a recent address, Her Highness Zahra pointed out the critical role that the Aga Khan University plays in advancing education and healthcare in East Africa.

She emphasized the need for the EAC to provide the necessary support and encouragement for AKU to continue its mission of excellence.

Her Highness lauded the Aga Khan University’s track record of providing high-quality education and healthcare services.

“We are noting the AKU’s commitment in serving marginalized communities and addressing the pressing health and education challenges in the Eastern Africa region.

Zahra called on the EAC to collaborate closely with AKU, leveraging its expertise and resources to develop innovative solutions to the region’s most pressing issues.

By working together, Her Highness emphasized, the East African Community and Aga Khan University can create a brighter future for all East Africans.

AKU President and Vice Chancellor Sulaiman Shahabuddin described the day a ‘crowning moment,’ for the graduates, noting that the University has awarded nearly 20,000 diplomas, degrees and postgraduate certificates to date.

Shahabuddin also outlined the University’s plans for the future, which are contained in its new five-year strategic plan.

They include launching close to a dozen new degree programs in fields ranging from data science to teacher education; enhancing research capacity in mental health, climate change and other disciplines.

Other proposals include the expansion of the AKU health system; deepening the University’s partnerships with public and private institutions at home and abroad; and continuing to earn new forms of academic and health care accreditation from leading international organizations.

“That AKU has been able to achieve so much across its four decades is above all thanks to its founder, Chancellor and chief benefactor, His Highness the Aga Khan,” President Shahabuddin said.

“His Highness’s vision continues to guide us and continually inspire us with the strength to make bold decisions that keep AKU at the forefront of innovation, quality and impact.”
