Proposed Monduli Vocational and Technical Training Center stuck in Limbo for 40 years

Tanzania is working to rescue the proposed Vocational Technical Training Center planned for Monduli District in Arusha and which had stuck in limbo for over four decades now.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan reminded that the former Prime Minister, Edward Moringe Sokine, who was also the legislator for Monduli Constituency had donated land for the construction of the Vocational and Technical Training Center in the precinct.

“The Tertiary training facility venture was to be implemented by the Catholic Church but so far the project is yet to be realized,” pointed out President Samia, requesting the Archdiocese of Arusha to consult with the Regional Commissioner regarding reviving the works.

“Tanzania has revised the country’s education policy which started to be executed from January 2024 which now stresses vocational and technical training as well as work studies,” President Samia maintained.

The Head of State was addressing thousands of people who gathered at the residence of the former Premier in Monduli to mark the 40th Anniversary of Edward Sokoine’s death.

She said the government has accomplished special projects that saw the construction of four new education institutions in Monduli District within a period of only three years.

She listed the completed projects as that of Imairete Primary School, the Miserani Secondary School, Mswakini Secondary and the latest, ultra-modern Lepurko Secondary school.

They happen to be among the new institutions that have been built in Monduli District.

President Samia added that the government had also invested over 7 billion/- for school feeding programs in the Monduli District.

In addition the state has accomplished the construction of the Lolkisale Health Center in Monduli.

As for the water problems affecting the district, the government is pumping 27 billion/- for the ongoing projects aimed at supplying water from Arusha City to a total of 17 villages in Monduli.

Earlier, the son of the late Premier, Ambassador Joseph Sokoine appealed to the President to re-construct and upgrade the large water well which Sokoined had dug in the seventies to trap rain water for flood control as well as serving as watering trough for local livestock.

Former Prime Minister, Edward Moringe Sokoine was killed in a road accident around this time, in 1984.

Every ten year the government organizes a special celebration to celebrate the life of the patriotic leader.

Official reports from the Sokoine Foundation indicate that a special book about the Premier will be released later this year.

Former President, Jakaya Kikwete graced the 30th Anniversary of Edward Sokoine’s death in 2014 and used the occasion to commission a new house for the late premier’s family.

Previously in 2004, the former Prime Minister, Frederick Sumaye led his predecessors, including Salim Ahmed Salim, John Malecela and Joseph Sinde Warioba to mark the 20th Anniversary of the late Premier’s death in Monduli.

Until his death, at Dakawa section of Morogoro, the late Edward Moringe Sokoine of the Mollel clan was the Member of Parliament for the Monduli Constituency, which by then had extended to as far as Longido District.

He died in a road accident while traveling from Dodoma, where he was attending a National Assembly session.

On his way back to Dar-es-salaam on Thursday, the 12th of April 1984, his official Mercedes-Benz car was involved in a road accident.

A speeding Toyota Land-Cruiser BJ Series, which was being driven by one Dumisan Dube, a South African freedom fighter, rammed into the premier’s car resulting in Sokoine’s death.

He left behind two wives, Napono who stays at the Premier’s residence in Monduli-Juu and Nekiteto, who had another home in Makuyuni Ward.

Napono bore six children, five males and one female while Nekiteto managed five children, four of whom are all female and the last born being the only male.
