The Chairman of the leading opposition party in Tanzania, Freeman Mbowe walks free from custody after the Republic declared no interest to pursue the terrorism charges against him further.
He was being charged in court for the last eight months or so.
The Senior State attorney Robert Kidando signed the ‘Nolle Prosequi’ sheet in Dar-es-salaam on the 4th of March 2022.
According to the Nolle Proseque…
“The court is informed by Director of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the Republic that he will not further prosecute Freeman Aikaeli Mbowe (and three others), for the offences of conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, providing funds to commit terrorist acts, participating in a terrorist meeting and possession of property for commission of terrorist acts,”
Charged for offences of conspiracy to commit terrorist acts the accused are named as Halfan Bwire Hassan, Adam Hassan Kasekwa, Mohammed Abdillahi Ling’wenya and Freeman Aikaeli Mbowe.
Arrested in July 2021, they were apparently, facing charges under the Economic Case Number 16 of 2021 pitting the Republic versus the four accused.
Freeman Mbowe is the leader of the main opposition party, the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA).
