More Tanzanians and Ugandans are following up on Kenya’s General Elections 2022 than possibly any Kenyan would bother, if any of the neighbouring countries was conducting polls.
From social media platforms to street arguments, self-made teams supporting the two leading Kenyan Presidential candidates, William Samoei Ruto and Raila Oginga Odinga are having a field day trying to outdo one another.
Tanzanians whose usually just love to argue about two local football teams of Yanga and Simba, this time have a new topic with which to keep themselves occupied.
But even international media outlets that normally wouldn’t have given a toss if the elections were being conducted in the other East African Countries, are all focused on Kenya.
On the official voting day, August 9, 2022 it was a public holiday in Kenya.
Schools have also been on recess and set to open classes again on Monday, August 15.
While it is a close run between Raila and Ruto, the latter seems to be a favourite candidate among most Tanzanians, if ongoing arguments in the streets are anything to go by.
The two leading Kenyan Media outlets, Nation and Citizen TV each seem to have different tallying results.
With the Nation (NTV and Online), William Ruto is seen leading in the ongoing counts of 2022 polls.
Citizen-TV with its related links shows Raila Odinga on the lead most of the time despite being quite slow in updating the numbers.
Kenya is the wealthiest nation among the seven East African Community Member States.
The country’s outgoing President, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, happens to be the son of the first President, Jomo Kenyatta, who died in office in August 1978.
Kenyatta Senior was succeeded by Daniel Arap Moi (The longest serving Head of State), who ruled the country for 24 years until 2002.
Mwai Kibaki, who defeated Uhuru Kenyatta in the December 2002 polls, would be the country’s third president.
Kibaki would again contest against Raila Odinga in the highly disputed 2007 elections, whose results declared the incumbent the winner, amidst protests that lead to chaos.
In 2012 Uhuru Kenyatta, teaming up with William Ruto, managed to grab the top seat.
