World Bank injects USD 5.3 billion to uplift Dodoma City

The rapidly growing Dodoma City, which recently became Tanzania’s new capital is getting a shot in the arm from the World Bank to the tune of 14.2 billion/-, including roads.

According to officials the money is being invested for the facelift of important Infrastructures in the Dodoma Central Business District.

The initiative is being implemented through the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) Project.

The works are undertaken by the Azhar Construction Company Limited.

In the implementation of the project, three other construction companies have been picked to provide consultants services, which are Hong-IK Engineering Consultants Co. Ltd in association with Gaugepro Consultant Ltd, as well as G and Y Engineering Consult PLC.

The coordinator of the TACTIC project in Dodoma, Engineer Kileo Nicodemus said the project implementation started back in March 2025 and is ongoing and expected to run for twelve consecutive months.

The uplifting of Dodoma’s famous Majengo market, construction of the mini- bus stands, footbridges as well as gender sensitive bridges in several parts of the city, are among the listed projects.

“This project aims to improve urban infrastructure in 45 Local Government Authorities (LGAs), and in Dodoma, it currently works to improve markets infrastructures and foot bridges,” Kileo said.

“After completion of the current phase, we’re looking forward to embarking on implementation of phase three, through which we are planning to facelift more markets, including the Sabasaba and Mkonze and Miyuji markets, among others,” the coordinator maintained.

The Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) project, funded by the International Development Association (IDA), aims to strengthen urban management, deliver improved infrastructure and services in 45 urban Local Government Authorities (LGAs) across Tanzania, with a focus on rehabilitation and expansion of urban infrastructure and institutional capacity building.

Through the TACTIC project, the World Bank (WB), has rolled out a total of USD 360m to support implementation of the grand project across the mentioned 45 city councils.

WB has decided to inject the country with the lucrative funds to support improvement of key infrastructures within the cities after being satisfied with previous works reflecting value for money, demonstrated by the country during implementation of different prior WB’s projects in Tanzania.

The prior project that was implemented under WB funds in the country include the Urban Local Government Strengthening Program (ULGSP), Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP) as well as the Tanzania Strategic Cities Project (TSCP) which was executed through funds from the World Bank (IDA Credit) and a grant from the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark.
