Rains could end sooner than expected in Tanzania, but may cause floods in Kenya and Uganda

As the monsoon rains continue to pound most parts of Tanzania, Kenya and other areas in East Africa, latest forecasts indicate a follow-up drought spell in the region after May 2025.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) forecasts that rains will be cutting off in the last week of April for most parts of East Africa.

High chances of drier than usual conditions indicated over the eastern horn of Africa with the central and north-western areas expected to record wetter than usual conditions during the April to June season.

The corresponding temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual. People should thus brace for the forthcoming hot spell.

Rainfall Forecast for April 2025

There may be floods in April as wetter than normal conditions are expected over parts of north-western of Kenya, western Ethiopia, eastern Uganda, most parts of southern South Sudan, as well as Rwanda and Burundi.

Drier than usual conditions expected over eastern parts of Kenya, central and eastern Ethiopia, western Uganda, and parts of western Rwanda and Northern Tanzania. 

This therefore indicates that rains will abate sooner than expected in Arusha, Manyara, Kilimanjaro and Singida regions of Tanzania.

Temperature Forecast for April 2025

Warmer than usual conditions expected over most parts of the region.

Normal conditions expected over parts of central Somalia.

Seasonal Rainfall Forecast for April to June 2025

Drier than usual conditions expected over south-eastern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, eastern Kenya, and isolated areas in western Uganda and South Sudan. 

Wetter than usual conditions expected over western Kenya, eastern Uganda, much of South Sudan, southern Sudan, parts of central to south-western Ethiopia, Rwanda, parts of Burundi and Tanzania.

Seasonal Temperature Forecast for April to June 2025

Warmer than usual conditions are expected over most parts of the region. 

Normal to cooler than normal temperatures are expected over the cross-border areas of South Sudan-Uganda-Kenya.
