The United States’ Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello is currently on another mission, which takes him to Qatar, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and Mauritania.
Perriello is traveling to Doha, Nairobi, London, and Nouakchott in a journey which started on December 6 to continue diplomatic efforts to scale up humanitarian assistance to the people of Sudan.
The envoy’s latest mission also attempts to deter atrocities and weapon flows as well as coordinating efforts to end the ongoing conflicts in Sudan, according to an official statement from the office of the Spokesperson of the U.S Department of State.
“Building on recent progress that expanded humanitarian access into and within Sudan, the Special Envoy will meet with key government officials and representatives of the African Union, the Arab League and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The U.S Special envoy for Sudan will also have an audience with the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and the Sudanese civil society.
In his engagements, envoy Tom Perriello should be emphasizing the urgent need for the warring parties to allow additional United Nations (UN) humanitarian hubs to facilitate the distribution of aid throughout Sudan.
The conflicting groups of Sudan are also being advised to enable humanitarian corridors that ensure the safe, unhindered movement of civilians and humanitarian assistance; improve protections for civilians, including women and girls subjected to gender-based violence; and support a political transition to civilian governance.
With one year into the war in Sudan, it is reported that more than 14 million people have had to flee their homes because of the conflict with little to no access to food, shelter and basic necessities.
Many of the Sudanese that have been compelled to escape have ended up in camps where conditions are dire with a lack of food and healthcare.
So far, official figures indicate that one in seven of the internally displaced people in the world happen to be Sudanese.
