Ugandan Rebel, Joseph Kony faces new charges at ICC in The Hague next September

The ICC has upped charges against the Ugandan Rebel Leader Joseph Kony Bringing Total to 39.

The International Criminal Court has just added three new charges against fugitive Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony raising the total number of indictments against the renegade to 39.

The amendments of criminal charges against the runaway Kony came after new evidence emerged recently, including testimonies from more of his alleged victims, people who suffered persecution rape and sexual enslavement under his arm.

Maria Mabinti Kamara the outreach coordinator for the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Uganda stated that, based on the new evidence the number of charges against the fugitive has increased from 36 to 39 

Joseph Kony however remains at large since an arrest warrant was issued against him twenty years ago in 2005.

The Ugandan renegade was initially charged with 36 counts including war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the brutal insurgency led by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda and neighboring countries 

The new charges involve his alleged role in attacks on civilians across eight locations including Lwala Girls’ Secondary School in Kalaki District and seven internally displaced persons camps.

The Hague based ICC accuses Kony of murder sexual enslavement abduction persecution on political and gender grounds and looting civilian property 

Maria Kamara the ICC official in East Africa added that the prosecution alleges over 100 girls were abducted during an attack on Lwala Girls’ School on June 24 2003 

The International criminal Court in The Hague has scheduled a hearing to confirm the charges against Kony for September 9 2025 at the ICC headquarters in the South Holland Province of the Netherlands.

The hearing in The Hague will still proceed in absentia if Kony fails to appear before the court, which is likely to be the case anyway.
