Planning to visit your children at schools in Uganda? Dont bother.
Uganda is banning all school visitation days and related events as the Ebola pandemic continues to take toll onto the East African country.
A Government circular number 22 of 2022 directs all District Education Officers and all Heads of Institutions of Learning to immediately suspend all school visitations across the nation.
The dispatch reading “Immediate suspension of school visitation days during Ebola virus disease outbreak in Uganda,” points out that the institutions of learning are more susceptible due to the concentration of persons.
“As you are aware, the country is experiencing an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). This is a very serious disease that poses grave danger to us all if its spread is not effectively controlled.”
Signed by Ismael Mulindwa on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, the letter reminds that the Ministry of Health and the National Taskforce have advised institutions of learning to remain open.
“However, as per our earlier circular, the management of all learning institutions are required to take extra care to ensure effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) by strictly observing and implementing the Standard Operating Procedures provided by the Ministry of Health.”

Given that some positive cases have now been confirmed among learners from families of known contacts, it is necessary to strengthen the existing infection prevention measures at school level.
“In this regard, the Ministry of Education and Sports has, with immediate effect, suspended all school visitation days and leavers parties until the end of the current school term.”

Apparently the order also advises that students in boarding institutions should be discouraged from making non-essential trips out of the school.
In the footnote, the government order calls upon all involved persons to observe heightened vigilance and effective implementation of the SOPs in order to control the spread of the Ebola disease and save lives.
The circular has been delivered to all Chief Administrative officers, Resident District Commissioners, Education Secretaries of Faith Based Organizations and all Chairpersons of school Boards of Governors and School Management Committees.
