U.S embassy in Dar-es-salaam warns of security threats along the Indian Ocean Coastline of Tanzania

The Embassy of the United States in Dar-es-salaam has prohibited American Government personnel from venturing into the Islands and coastal areas south of Kisiju, along the Tanzania’s Indian Ocean shoreline.

Without explaining further, the U.S Embassy simply warns of imminent danger and security concern in the said coastal location.

“Avoid travel to islands and coastal areas south of Kisiju, Tanzania. The U.S. government personnel are especially prohibited from traveling to these areas without prior approval.”

And the travel alert goes on to warn people to avoid the area, monitor local media for updates, and notify friends and family of one’s safety.

The dispatch from the U.S embassy also alerts people to be aware of their surroundings, review personal security plans and keep an open eye when in locations frequented by tourists.

As for the Islands it is still not known if the famous Mafia archipelago is included in the warning, though the waters along Tanzanian coastline is dotted with many islets as well.

In response to the United States embassy alert, the Police in Tanzania have released their own statement saying the force was aware of the circulating advisory and that the cops were investigating the claims of possible security concerns along the coastline and especially Mkuranga and Kisiju areas that borders Kibiti.

Kisiju is located in the Pwani region of Tanzania, south of Dar-es-Salaam.

The distance from Kisiju to the regional capital of Pwani at Kibaha is approximately 85 kilometers. The distance from Kisiju to the capital of Tanzania, that is Dodoma, is around 420.1 kilometers.

The area has a decreasing population, because there were 12,000 people living at Kisiju during the 20212 National Census, a number which for some reason fell to around 8000 during the 2022 count.
