Passenger Train Services Between Tanzania and Zambia Restart on Cheap

The Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority is resuming full passenger train service operations between Dar-es-salaam and Kapiri-Mposhi.

Official dispatch from the TAZARA Headquarters in Dar-es-salaam is to the effect that the passenger wagons get to connect the two destinations effective from October 18, 2022.

Following three weeks of assessing the suitability of the Chambeshi Bridge for full train operations and the temporary suspension of passenger services in Zambia due to a goods train accident that occurred at the Msanza-Kapwila area in Nakonde District on 22 September 2022, we are now happy to announce the resumption of full passenger train operations.

A statement from TAZARA

The Mukuba Passenger Train in Zambia, which was hitherto restricted to operating between Kasama and Nakonde Stations, will now also start running through to New Kapiri-Mposhi effective from this running week.

Both the Mukuba and the Kilimanjaro Passenger Trains will resume their cross-border services from New Kapiri-Mposhi and Dar es Salaam, respectively, from October 18, 2022 forthwith.

Traveling first class on the train will not break the bank either, at just USD 45, which is equivalent to 104,000/- Tanzanian Shillings, according to TAZARA, should be very affordable at any standard.

Package comes with free scenic landscape gazing

Plus, one gets the bonus of free wildlife gazing as the train journey cuts through Mikumi and Nyerere National Parks.

But still, the train wagons come with three other options.

The Second-Class ride for instance, costs 85,000/- in Tanzanian Currency, but that gets as low as USD 35.

Whatever this means, there is also the ‘Super seater,’ category in which a passenger gets to pay 79,000/- shillings in local currency or just USD 33.

And if crowding isn’t a problem one may also opt for the third-class seating which goes for 73,000/- or less, this translates to as little as USD 30 per the train trip connecting Tanzania to Zambia.

Journeys from Dar-es-salaam to Kapiri-mposhi start every Tuesdays and Fridays.
