Flames of fire are once more wreaking havoc on top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.
Authorities at the Kilimanjaro National Park have confirmed the incident and right now efforts to contain the outbreak are on cue.
The fire, according to observers, initially erupted on Mweka Highlands on slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Flames were spotted towards early hours of Saturday October 22, 2022.
Fires on Kilimanjaro have always been the norm, in the tenth month of the year, possibly due to high temperatures affecting the surrounding areas in the months of October and November.
The Northern Parts of Tanzania are suffering serious spells of hot weather at the moment and observers feel this could also be the reason behind fire outbreaks on the mountain.
Around this time, two years ago, in October 2020, a fire broke out on Mount Kilimanjaro.
By the time it was put out, the blaze had destroyed more than 28 square kilometers of vegetation on the mountain.
The fire, which was initially fanned by strong winds, started at the Whona area and spread from there.
After the 2020 fire outbreak, a total of 30 women, took the initiative of planting trees on lower slopes of the mountain.
The team comprises of members of staff of Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA), Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) and the CRDB Bank in Kilimanjaro Region.
They participated in the tree planting exercises conducted on the Eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro falling onto the Usseri ward of Rombo District.
Summiting at over 5890 meters above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro has several distinct vegetation belts.
The slopes are surrounded by rich biodiversity as well as some of the known, tallest trees on the continent.
Forest cover blankets the entire low and middle slopes of Kilimanjaro.
