Egyptian multinational Elsewedy Electric is launching its latest plant, a transformer producing establishment in Tanzania.
The new Elsewedy Transformer plant operates within and will be churning out products from the Elsewedy Electric Industrial Complex in Kigamboni, islet of Dar-es-salaam.
The plant is part of the second phase of the USD 50 million Kigamboni Complex.
Previously in December 2021, President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Elsewedy Electric CEO Ahmed El Sewedy inaugurated Elsewedy Industrial Complex in Tanzania.
It operates Elsewedy Electric East Africa Limited building on the ongoing cooperation of Elsewedy Electric and Tanzania.
The venture targets to transform the country into a manufacturing and export hub for the company’s operations in Africa.
The Kigamboni-based factory is the company’s second-largest complex only surpassed by Elsewedy Electric’s main factory in Egypt.
The Complex standing on 120,100 square meters, comprises several manufacturing facilities, such as cables and conductors, transformers, PVC and meters.
It also includes a logistics center on a 4,800 square meters area.
The establishment will produce the solutions and equipment necessary for the industrialization strategy of Tanzania 2025.
It will also cater to the demand of the Eastern African Region, Sub-Saharan Africa as well as the entire continent.
The plant is set to provide over 500 jobs for talented youth in the first phase alone.
In addition, it includes a training academy to provide innovative technical education and vocational training programs with international standards to skill and train aspiring youth.

Elsewedy Electric Co S.A.E. is an Egyptian multinational electrical company, which was founded in 1938.
A brainchild of the Elsewedy family, the company manufactures and sells a number of integrated energy products and services.
Its products are classified in seven energy segments, including electric cables and accessories, electrical products, telecommunications, transformers and wind-energy generation.
Others are energy measurement and management, engineering, procurement and contracting.
But in the past, Tanzania used to have its own electric equipment manufacturing factories.
Tanzania Electric Company (TANELEC) and Northern Electric Manufacturing (NEM) both operated from Arusha but for some reason, they closed shop.
