South Sudan bans personal emails usage in government institutions

The government of South Sudan has ​just declared a ban ​and restriction on the use of personal email addresses in all official transactions between government institutions​, their staff and officials.

The word is there should be no​ internet-based emails such as ‘Gmail,’ ‘Outlook,’ ‘Yahoo,’ or ‘Proton Mail’ in any of the official public communications.

It seems African government are out on full force war against digital platforms. Tanzania has just stifled Twitter (X) which can longer be accessed in the country.

Now South Sudan has just declared war on personal or internet-based free email platforms. At least among government workers.

The move, according to the government in Juba is move aimed at enhancing cybersecurity and addressing growing threats to the safety of official communications 

The announcement came during the launch ceremony of the official electronic platform of the Media Authority where David Yao Yao Deputy Minister of Information and Information Technology confirmed that the adoption of an official government email portal has become mandatory.

“This is to ensure data protection and the confidentiality of official information,” the minister maintained.

Yao Yao added that “this measure is part of a broader strategy to enhance transparency and efficiency in government services”

For his part Elijah Alier, ​the Director-General of the Media Authority pointed out that the new platform will facilitate the accreditation procedures for media sector workers and will provide a clear legal framework for regulating journalistic work.

Alier insisted that the South Sudan government is working to build a secure digital infrastructure that supports the transition to electronic administration” 

The ban on personal or internet-based email services comes within the framework of the South Sudanese government’s efforts to keep pace with global digital developments especially after reports of increasing security risks related to the hacking of personal email accounts used in official transactions It also coincides with similar measures in other countries to enhance protection from cybercrime
