Six Killed as Bus rolls over near Arusha Airport. Six Ethiopians perish in Njombe as truck overturns

At least twelve people have been killed in two different road accidents that have occurred almost simultaneously in Arusha and Njombe Regions.

Six people, mostly passengers have been confirmed dead in road accident which occurred near Arusha Airport, Thursday evening.

Previously eye witnesses claimed that at least ten people were feared dead following the evening road carnage which occurred in Kisongo area, near the Arusha Airport along the Arusha-Dodoma Highway.

The accident involved a Nissan Caravan minibus with plate numbers T-135 DBC which was travelling from Duka Bovu area of Monduli heading to Arusha City.

Other reports say previously the van had left Karatu that afternoon and drove via Mto wa Mbu and made a stop over at Duka Bovu, before starting off the journey to Arusha City.

The reportedly speeding bus was then involved in the deadly accident at the Kisongo section of the road when its driver tried to overtake another vehicle.

Apparently the driver saw another incoming truck and trying to avoid head-on collision he rapidly swerved from the road.

However the equally speeding lorry hit the mini bus throwing it into the bush where it hit a large tree with a deafening bang before rolling over.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Justine Masejo who serves as the Arusha Regional Police Commander, has confirmed the incident saying so a total of six bodies have been retrieved from the bus wreckage.

Among the dead victims there are four males and two women.

The bodies of the dead passengers have been taken to the Regional Mount Meru Hospital mortuary, where relatives can go for identification.

On the other hand the various injured persons, whose number is yet to be known, are currently admitted and undergoing treatment at various health centres. Nine happen to be critically injured.

The stretch of the road which also leads to a number of tourist destinations such as Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara National Parks is not exactly known for serious road accidents.

Another accident in Njombe

Meanwhile again six other people have been killed in another accident which occurred along Makambako Road in Njombe Region.

The deceased are said to be foreigners, from Ethiopia who were riding behind a cargo truck which overturned at Wang’ingombe District of Njombe, killing them instantly.

The Scania Truck was travelling from Iringa heading to the neighbouring country of Zambia and it seem the foreigners from Ethiopia were hitch-hiking their way to South Africa.
