Roadkill: Runaway truck plunges into Crowd kills eleven people in Tanga

A runaway Semi-trailer truck with faulty brakes plunged into a crowd of people who were gathered on the roadside at the Segera junction, killing eleven on the spot.

Early reports from Tanga reveal that there was an accident involving a Tata Minibus along the road which connects Korogwe, Segera and Coastal Regions of Pwani and Dar-es-salaam.

Following the accident, a multitude of people rushed to the scene, some attempting to rescue passengers, while others were simply standing nearby to witness the incident, each trying to explain how it could have possibly occurred.

The accident had occurred within the Chang’ombe roadside Village in the Segera Ward of Handeni District in Tanga Region.

But as more and more people flocked to the scene of the first accident, there was an oncoming lorry, a flatbed semi-trailer with registration numbers T.680 BQW speeding towards the scene.

Apparently the Chinese-made truck which was ferrying bags of cement from Tanga heading towards Chalinze, is said to have had a faulty braking system and therefore failed to stop in time as it swerved at the junction and plunged into the crowd before leaning dangerously on the roadside.

A total of 11 people were killed on the spot while several others sustained injuries from the double accident and dual vehicle pileup. These were rushed to the nearby hospitals.

The Tanga Regional Commissioner, Batilda Buriani confirmed the accident.
