Rebuilding Libya: Major construction works commence across several cities

Several major Infrastructure projects are being launched across a number of cities in Libya.

The Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund has signed new contracts to carry out important infrastructure projects in several cities across the North African country.

The Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund is a development institution under the Eastern region government.

The Director General of the Development Fund, Engineer Belqasim Khalifa Haftar, signed the agreements to that effect with the Chairman of Egyptian based Neom Real Estate Development, Trade, and Investment Company, Dr. Asim Al-Jazzar.

According to reports from Benghazi, these projects are part of a national plan to rebuild roads, bridges, electrical systems, and other essential services across the country.

The signed contracts cover several key development projects, among them the construction of the proposed 800 meters of retaining walls in Derna to prevent landslides and improve public safety.

Other planned works entail the expansion and upgrading of the 62.5 kilometers of Al-Bakur, the major road which connects the higher Libyan mountain areas to the lower Mediterranean coast.

The Eastern Region Government is also intending to rehabilitate the road stretching over 22 kilometers within the Bayda city’s western entrance as well as completing the roads world near the two main city bridges to ease traffic.

The project also includes the installation of sewage networks and building a power treatment plant in Derna to strengthen basic services and energy supply, as well as adding eight large water culverts at Derna Corniche to protect against flooding and improve rainwater drainage.

Construction works also extend to the designing and building of the Bayda sewage treatment plant with a 25,000 cubic meter capacity to support future urban growth.

As far as the Libyan authorities are concerned, these projects aim to support long-term development, improve public services, and help create better living conditions throughout Libya, a country which has been suffering from a series of chaotic incidents for over 15 years now.
