Police investigating the death of Night Guard in Arusha who was allegedly ‘haunted by demons’

A night watchman known as Samuel Charles has committed suicide by hanging himself from the roof using own shirt.

But relatives and neighbours of the 39-year-old Charles claim the late resident of Daraja-Mbili was being tormented by demons.

Charles hanged himself on the early morning of November 18, 2024, after returning home from what he claimed to be a mysterious place, well at least, this is what the deceased is alleged to have told his wife.

The night before, Samuel Charles did not return home and when his wife, Esther Samuel phoned him to ask where he could be, the deceased claimed to have said he was on his usual guarding duties at work.

However his wife wanted to know which work, because on that particular night, Charles was supposed to be off-duty and therefore should be home.

Still, the late Charles spent the night away only to return in the morning looking dishevelled, feeling regretful and remorseful.

When Esther probed him regarding where he spent the night, Charles did not answer except promising his wife that he would tell her where he was in the previous night, after breakfast.

Esther then prepared tea then went out to buy some bread from the nearby shop.

She was shocked upon returning back to the house and finding her husband hanging from the ceiling with his torn shirt tightened around his neck with the other end secured on the roof.

He had used a water bucket to tie the knot on the ceiling before literally kicking the bucket to his death, at least according to the neighbours though the police are still investigating the incident.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Justine Masejo insists that, the real cause of Charles’ death is still unknown, though early reports indicate some form of suicide.

Esther claims that the late Charles was being tormented by spirits and would always keep talking to himself, sometimes shouting at some invisible persons.

“We took him to prayer sessions in church for exorcising the demons from his head and at one time he seemed okay, but recently the condition got worse,” said the lady.

One of their neighbours, Saimon Mollel, affirms that the late Charles was indeed haunted by some dark spirits and used to speak some strange words on his own and sometimes shout at unknown persons and even run aimlessly like a mad man.

“We used to tie Charles up and carry him to various churches for exorcism,” said Mollel, explaining that after the prayers, Samuel would calm down for a few weeks before erupting again in dementia.

“But other than that, Samuel Charles was a very good person, always ready to help when needed and throughout his life the deceased never quarrelled with anybody in the neighbourhood,” said Mollel.
