Will Kenya’s 2022 General Elections be free and fair?
The Answer comes out two days after polls, that is on Thursday, August 11.
Former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete is the one to declare if Kenya’s elections were ‘Free and Fair’ as he leads the Election Observation Mission being deployed by the East African Community.
People of Kenya go to polls on Monday, August 9, 2022 in the first major general Elections since 2013.

Kikwete leads the EAC Observation Mission consisting of about 50 observers from the Seven Member States of the Arusha based Community.
The team stays in Kenya for 12 days, until August 12, 2022, ‘observing’ the elections.
According to Kikwete, the Mission assesses the level of preparedness among the key electoral stakeholders for the Kenyan elections.
His team will also observe the level of compliance of the electoral processes and management to the international, regional and national established laws, principles and practices.
They will also check the adherence to the democratic principles of the East African Community as stipulated in the Treaty.
The Observer Mission is going to offer objective recommendations for continuous improvement for the conduct of such elections in the region.
The EAC Observer Mission builds on the outcomes of the Joint African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), COMESA and EAC pre-election assessment conducted over the last one month.
The findings of the observer mission will be tabled through an Interim Statement on 11th August, 2022.
In 2007, Jakaya Kikwete, then President of Tanzania played an important role in the peace restoration process when post election violence ensued in Kenya.
