A journalist working for the state owned, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation, has died while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Moshi, latest reports reveal.
Joachim Kapembe, a video cameraman for TBC who was based at Babati, in the Northern Region of Manyara, is said to have been part of the team which ascended Africa’s highest peak to unveil what is being described as ‘High Speed Internet!’
It was a follow-up trip to launch the Fibre Optic Cable service on top of Africa’s highest peak, because already the lines were installed from as early as August 2022.
The accident which killed the journalist on the team was a bicycle ride as he was cycling down the Mountain from Kibo to Horombo.
The journey to unveil the Internet Cable was organized by the Ministry of Information through the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority and the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited which supplies the Fiber Optic Cable.
The Head of Corporate Communications Department at Tanzania National Park, Catherine Mbena has confirmed the sad incidence adding Ahsante Tours handled the logistics.
Commissioner Mbena however adds that it was too early to tell what exactly happened on the mountain before the journalist’s death, because the Kilimanjaro Police was also on the case.
The Management of Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) has also issued statement to that effect, saying the death occurred during descending trip.
Though the feat to inaugurate the Fiber Optic Internet Service was supposed to be part of the Uhuru Celebrations the event graced by Nape Nnauye the information minister, occurred later after the previous journey of December 9.
