Ongoing El-Nino rains predicted to connect with forthcoming Monsoons in April 2024

The ongoing El-Nino weather spell with its torrential rains is likely to go on until April 2024 when the wetter than usual conditions get to connect with the Monsoons.

This is according to the report released by the Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) for the Intergovernmental Authority of Development (IGAD).

ICPAC is a Climate Center accredited by the World Meteorological Organization that provides Climate Services to eleven East African Countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Sudan and South-Sudan.

Forecast by ICPAC indicates that there are higher chances of wetter than usual conditions over equatorial and north-eastern parts of the Eastern Africa region from February to April.

This is a continuation of heavy precipitations that have been occurring in most parts of East Africa since November 2023.

The Kenya and Tanzania coastline will however be exempted from the usual torrential rains as indicated on the map.

On the other hand, the region is also expected to be warmer than usual creating a ‘malaria-friendly,’ tropical humid weather.

Rainfall Forecast for February 2024

Wetter-than-usual conditions expected in Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi as well as over the South-western parts of Uganda and South-western Kenya.

Dry conditions will also be experienced over the rest of the Eastern Africa region. This is a normal condition for the months of February and March, every year.

Seasonal Rainfall Forecast for February to April 2024

Wetter than usual conditions are expected in Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda as well as Northern parts of Tanzania, Southern section of South Sudan, a greater part of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti.

Meanwhile, drier than usual conditions are to be experienced over Southern areas of Tanzania, and localized regions in Ethiopia.

The rest of the East African region is generally dry during this season.
