Tanzania, in the country’s capacity as the chair of the Association of African Diamond Producers, is hosting a special continental meeting of Ministers from the ADPA Member States, taking place in Arusha.
According to the Minister of Minerals, Doto Biteko, this is the third emergency meeting of the ADPA cabinet.
With 18 Ministers in attendance, sessions are held at the Arusha International Conference Center (AICC).
The ADPA Cabinet Meeting addresses, among other things, approval of the amended constitution of the association.
African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA) is an intergovernmental organization that seeks to strengthen the level of influence African diamond-producing countries have on the world diamond market.
ADPA adopts harmonized legal solutions and the exchange of information between member countries in areas related to mining and commercialization in which individual states have acquired valuable experience.
The Association promotes mutual technical assistance in the coordination of policies and strategies of development of the diamondiferous sector.
It also works to transform conflict diamonds into minerals of peace and sustainable development.
ADPA also strives to build cooperation between member countries in policies and strategies concerning prospecting, mining, production, cutting and polishing, as well as development of human resources
The meeting will see the appointment of the Executive Secretary to serve in the ADPA Secretariat, as well as the two auxiliary deputies.
Established in 2006 the Association comprises 12 Members and Six Observer countries.
Tanzania currently chairs the ADPA Cabinet having been appointed in 2021.
Serving for two consecutive years, the next Chair will be appointed in March 2023.
ADPA Member States include Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, DR Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Namibia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo and Zimbabwe.
Observer countries include Algeria, Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali and Mauritania.
Tanzania is the eighth African Country as far as Diamonds Production is concerned and ranks at number 10 globally.
Tanzania Diamonds are mined at Williamson Diamond mines at Mwadui located some 27 kilometers from Shinyanga town.
In 2020, Tanzania’s diamond production amounted to some 100 thousand carats. This was a decrease of 75 percent compared to the previous year.
The country is among the world’s largest diamond producers by volume.
Worldwide it is Russia which tops the bill. Russia produced some 39.12 million carats of diamonds, in 2021 making the country the world’s largest diamond mining country.
At that time, Botswana and Canada ranked second and third, with a production of 22.9 and 17.6 million carats of diamonds, respectively.

Major Diamond Companies in Botswana are De Beers (Debswana), Petra Diamonds, Lucara Diamonds, Gem Diamonds, and Firestone Diamonds.
3. Canada’s average Diamond Production is set at 13,000,000 carats per year.
4. Angola Diamond Production is 8,500,000 carats in a year.
Major Diamond Companies in Angola include Alrosa (Catoca), De Beers, and Lucapa.
5. South African Annual Diamond Production is billed at 7,700,000 carats
6. The Democratic Republic of Congo Produces 3,700,000 carats of Diamond.
7. Namibia Diamond Production at the moment is 1,900,000 carats a year.
8. Lesotho Diamond Production is 1,100,000 Carats.
9. Australia Diamond Production is slotted at 340,000 Carats
10. Tanzania Diamond Production averages 260,000 carats per annum.
In 2021 some 12 Member States of the African Diamonds Producers Association held a two-day meeting in Dodoma to deliberating on harmonizing laws in mining sectors.
