Couple who met on Mount Kilimanjaro gets married in Ireland

The couple who met for the first time while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania has just gotten married in Ireland.

Susan Kilcline and Jonathan Crowe got wedded in Dublin in August 2023 that is almost six years after the two found each other on top of Africa’s highest peak during their September 2017 adventure in the Kilimanjaro Region.

According to the ‘Dublin Live,’ it took the brave duo ten days of intense hiking to reach the mountain’s Uhuru summit on the Kibo peak.

Susan explained that the support they gave each other helped them quickly establish a strong bond. The pair’s impressive feat allowed them to nurture a blossoming relationship.

“I struggled on summit night and Jon has been my rock and best friend ever since. We found that the ten day climb on a mountain creates an eternal bond, due to hostile climate, challenging journey and difficult conditions people have to endure!”

The couple’s engagement in 2021 mirrored their origin story as Jonathan proposed on a hike near Torc Waterfall in Kerry.

The duo tied the knot in Tankardstown House this year surrounded by close family and friends.

Susan was full of praise for her bridesmaid’s exceptional efforts to have the day go off without a hitch.

Her artistic flair came through in the form of an impressive Mount Kilimanjaro wedding cake.

Their tying knots occasion was captured by wedding photographer Livia Figueiredo.

“Jon and I met in the most wonderful way. We met climbing Kilimanjaro in September 2017, and since then, there’s been no looking back,” she recalls.

“We both took on our biggest challenge to date but little did we know that this adventure would redirect the course of our lives.”

For Jon, ascending the mountain, meant he needed to complete the adventure with someone special and capable.

And it was through the ten days’ expedition that he eventually realized Susan was that person.

“We found that a 10 day climb on a mountain can speed up a relationship,” he observes.

With no makeup, no showers and living in makeshift tents, everybody’s true colours eventually come out. A perfect atmosphere to make a real life partner it seems.

Then add stomach bugs, below zero temperatures and oxygen deprivation.

The couple realized that under these circumstances they found someone who would stand by them through thick and thin and force their smile along the gruelling journey.

We are forever grateful for meeting on Kilimanjaro, a journey that has given us countless memories to look back on.

Susan says she has never felt anything like it.

And at their wedding, six years later, everyone was there to celebrate two best friends from the peak of Kilimanjaro committing to each other.

The reception provided a good time too.

“I’d like to say the energy was solely down to the crowd being happy for Jon and I but it also being the first wedding after Covid might have had something to do with it,” stated Susan.
