Mystery surrounds the case of the light plane and helicopter crashes that have been occurring in Kenya and Ghana respectively with a few hours’ duration apart.
A Cessna Citation XLS aircraft with registration 5Y-FDM which was carrying four people on board crashed into a residential area just outside Nairobi, on Thursday, August 7, 2025, with early reports of the accident being conveyed by the Kenya Red Cross team.
The update is that two people have been confirmed dead from the crash.
The aircraft reportedly belongs to the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF).
The AMREF flying doctor Executive, Stephen Gitau said the plane which had flown from Wilson Airport on Thursday afternoon, was heading to Hargeisa Somalia but crashed shortly after the take-off.
Rescue teams were heading to the scene of the crash, said to be in Kiambu county at Mwihoko area within the Githurai 45 Sub-County, not very far away from Nairobi.
The Githurai Police Commander, Maurice Odanga confirmed the incident but couldn’t tell if there were any casualties.

While Military and police personnel moved onto the scene and quickly secured the area with yellow ribbons, it is still not clear how many people had been on the chopper and whether apart from the two deceased, there were any survivors from the crash.
Again, since the aircraft had crashed onto a residential section, we are not sure if there were people at the area of the accident and whether any of them escaped from the tragedy.
Officials in Kenya are yet to release a statement regarding the accident.
A day before, another tragic helicopter crashed in the Ashanti Region of Ghana claiming the lives of eight people on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
