After meeting with leaders of opposition parties and removing the ban imposed on political rallies, Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan seems to have lit green light to previously stifled multiparty politics.
Ever since she took over the presidency, Samia has been meeting leaders of political parties, including the exiled Tundu Lissu and the Chairperson of the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo, Freeman Mbowe.
Samia has also been attending a number of the political parties’ functions and now to crown it all, the President is now permitting public rallies.
The Head of State has declared that all political parties are free to organize meetings, including public political rallies as stipulated in the country’s constitution.
Her Predecessor, the late John Pombe Magufuli had previously banned opposition parties from conducting public meetings including open air rallies, that are now set to resume as the country rolls towards the 2025 General Elections.
For more than seven years now, opposition parties especially the most threatening, including the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) as well as the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT Wazalendo) were banned from organizing public meetings or any form of gathering.
The ruling party, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) however enjoyed the monopoly of doing political mobilization campaigns unhampered and usually under the protection of security forces including the police.
During the 2020 General Elections, the Opposition Parties were briefly permitted to conduct campaign rallies, but even then, the meetings would more often than not, be interfered by the police or receive threats from higher authorities.
After the 2020 Polls a number of politicians fled into exile, including the main Presidential Candidate, for CHADEMA, Tundi Antipas Lissu and the former Member of Parliament of Arusha, Godbless Lema.
