Karatu December Sports Festival to light up Christmas Holidays

Karatu December Sports Festival returns with what seems like a Christmas treat for residents of Arusha, Karatu, Ngorongoro and Mto-wa-Mbu.

The Festival kicks off on December 24, 2022 a day before Christmas, featuring a number of sporting events.

The events include soccer, volleyball, athletics, bicycle racing and traditional dances as well as choral (singing) competition.

According to the organizer for the athletics competitions, men will race for 10 kilometers distance, women 5 kilometers and children 2.5 kilometers.

According to the coordinator, Meta Petro, Soccer matches have already started at village and ward levels, after which they will move to division level and climax for the football and volleyball finals on December 23.

Bicycle riders will cover 60 kilometers in total, a cross-country distance which applies to both men and women riders.

But the overall pivotal venue for the December Sports Festival, as usual, remains to be the Mazingira Bora open grounds located at the center of Karatu Township.

After the events of December 24, all participants will be treated to a Christmas excursion, on December 25, involving game drives down the legendary Ngorongoro Crater in the adjacent Conservation Area.

Karatu Sports Festival is an annual event which gets staged in Karatu Township during Christmas seasons, usually attracting many sportsmen and women as well as spectators from various parts of Arusha Region.

As it happens, Arusha has very few entertainment events during end of year holidays and the few that come up are well received among local residents.

Most residents of Arusha, as well as other urban centers of Tanzania, including Dar-es-salaam normally travel up-country to spend the Christmas and New Year Holidays in rural villages.
