Koffi Olomide ignites rage in Tanzania over Soccer team bias

Congolese Musician, Koffi Olomide, is causing mayhem here … in a negative way too.

Mopao’s self-recorded video clip is making rounds online, featuring him chanting praises to one of the popular soccer teams of Dar-es-salaam, the Young Africans (Yanga).

There is nothing wrong with the video clip going viral on social media; But the ‘Pun Intended’ message isn’t doing him good. Actually it is splitting his Tanzanian fans.

In the video, Koffi olomide relaxes in a car as he verbally confirms that he will be in Dar-es-salaam on Sunday, the 29th of August 2021, to grace Young Africans Soccer Team’s annual holiday, the ‘Wananchi Day!’

Yanga plays against Zanaco Football Club of Zambia to celebrate the Wananchi Day 2021.

“Nakuja Dar-es-salaam; tukutane kwa Mkapa, Young Africans Sports Club, Sisi tuna watu!” (I am coming to Dar-es-salaam; Lets meet at Mkapa (National Stadium), Young Africans, we have people.” Here Mopao insinuates that Yanga has more people (fans).

Apparently the Dar Young Africans soccer team has invited the self-proclaimed ’13th Apostle,’ for their Saturday bash in the city.

Now, fans of the rival football team, Simba Sports Club are not amused, with some already vowing to delete Mopao’ music from their digital audio libraries.

It has also been a rather sensitive week for Simba fans, after their team lost a former spokesperson, Haji Manara, to their arch rival club Yanga. Fans of two teams have been bitterly lashing against one another throughout the week.

And even before the heat cools, Koffi Olomide makes scene with his own bias. Heads will roll in Dar. More on this here

Still, Koffi is not the first Congolese singer to endorse Young Africans, the late Kabasele Yampanya, (Pepe Kalle) recorded a his ‘Yanga Afrika’ in the 90s, while Mayaula Mayoni did actually play for the team, while in Dar-es-salaam.

Music wise, Koffi is not a stranger to Tanzania. Having performed here in various occasions, he even recorded a duet ‘Whaah’ with the country’s top teenage sensation, Diamond Platinumz. Somehow, Diamond calls himself ‘Simba’ and even recorded a song to praise the rival team to Yanga.
