The Police in Kenya have refuted speculations that they stole the black box from the destroyed fuselage of the Somalia bound aircraft which crashed shortly after taking off in Nairobi.
The accident Investigation Director Fred Kabunge while admitting that the cops had the black box, insisted that the police had picked up the flight recording gadget from the scene of the crash ‘unknowingly.’

So far, it has been confirmed that the investigators of the accident have finally managed to recover the aircraft black box.
Social media platforms in Kenya were burning with speculations that the police had grabbed the black box from the scene of the crash thinking it was a cash box. However the authorities have refuted the claims.
In the afternoon of Thursday, August 7, 2025, the light aircraft crashed in a residential area in Mwihoko section of Kiambu County, killing six passengers. The incident occurred at Mwihoko area within the Githurai 45 Sub-County, not very far away from Nairobi.
The Cessna Citation XLS aircraft with registration 5Y-FDM which was carrying six people on board crashed into a residential area just outside Nairobi.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the aircraft belonged to the Phoenix Aviation company and was operating under the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF)’s Flying Doctors services.
Later the AMREF Flying Doctors CEO Stephen Gitau issued a statement on the details of the aircraft, which crashed a few minutes after taking off at Wilson Airport.
The aircraft reportedly developed technical problems mid-air before it crashed into residential houses.
Several nearby buildings caught fire after the plane hit them, but the fire brigade managed to contain and extinguish the flames.
The Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula, confirmed that six people, including two doctors, two nurses, and two victims that were on the ground, died in the crash.
