January Heating Up: New Year 2025 will start with extreme temperatures across the Eastern African Region

January usually dries up the pockets and bank accounts. But in reality, the first month of 2025 is set to dry up the landscape as well as extreme temperatures heats up the Eastern African Precinct.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Predictions and Applications Center (ICPAC) has just released its Regional Weather Forecast covering the period between November 2024 and January 2025.

According to ICPAC, the year 2024 will close with mostly warmer conditions across the Eastern African Region, though rains will fall in selected areas.

But January 2025 gets to kick-start the New Year on an even warmer and drier note.

High chances of drier than usual conditions indicated over eastern Horn of Africa in November.

On the other hand wetter than usual conditions are likely to be experienced over most parts of the central sector.

The November 2024 to January 2025 season is expected to be largely drier than usual.

The corresponding seasonal temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual over most parts of the region.

Rainfall Forecast for November 2024

Wetter than usual conditions expected over Western Kenya, Eastern Uganda, Burundi, and several other places around Tanzania.

Drier than normal conditions expected over southern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, central to eastern Kenya, central to western Uganda, and isolated areas in north-western Tanzania.

Temperature Forecast for November 2024

Warmer than usual conditions are expected over most parts of the Eastern African region with the highest probabilities over coastal Sudan and the eastern parts of the region.

Normal temperature conditions are expected in northern Uganda, southern to central areas of South Sudan, and isolated areas in Sudan.

Seasonal Rainfall Forecast for November 2024 to January 2025

Drier than usual conditions expected over most parts of the region including southern Ethiopia, most parts of Uganda, Kenya, central to southern Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

Normal to wetter than usual conditions expected over eastern Uganda, north-western Kenya, and localized areas in Tanzania.

Seasonal Temperature Forecast for November 2024 to January 2025

Warmer than usual conditions are expected over most parts of the region with the highest probabilities indicated over the eastern areas.

Normal temperatures likely to be recorded over south-western parts of Sudan, western and southern South Sudan, and northern Uganda.
