Veteran journalist and former BBC World Service Correspondent in Tanzania, Erick David Nampesya has passed away at Kibamba in Dar-es-salaam.

He was previously undergoing medical treatment at the Mloganzila Hospital in the city.

Reports from his close family members say the late Nampesya was suffering from Hepatitis though he also developed stomach ulcers.

Around this time, nine years ago in August 2014, David Erick Nampesya played acoustic drums during the ceremony to officially launch the BBC offices in Dar-es-Salaam, proving that he was a multi-talented journalist.

Born in 1969, David Nampesya who used to report for the Swahili Service of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), recently also suffered serious head injuries after a tragic fall, at least according to his own statement, about two months earlier.

“I had fallen on a hard surface, hitting my head and suffered internal bleeding,” Nampesya had stated in May 2025 and later on assured that he was doing well after surgery.

Two days before his death, Erick David Nampesya was actively following a Taifa Stars football game and even wrote on his Facebook page that he was extremely impressed by the national team’s performance on the pitch.

David was so active online such that he even posted on his wall, a video clip of fellow colleague, the former BBC news anchor, Salim Kikeke who was vying for parliamentary seat in the Moshi Rural constituency of Kilimanjaro Region in the ongoing ruling party primary polls in Tanzania.

In 2017, Erick David Nampesya filed a lawsuit against the London-based British Broadcasting Corporation, accusing the BBC of unfairly terminating his employment as a reporter from Africa.

He filed his case at the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration (CMA) after the Broadcaster brought to an end his job at the BBC in October 2016.
