Donkey kills young boy in Namibia. Woman sues Ministry

A five-year-old boy was recently found dead underneath a laden donkey in Namibia.

The deceased was identified as Mariano Samaria Pombili Amakali.

The Oshikoto Police Commander Teopolina Kalompo-Nashikaku, said the incident occurred at Iihambo Iinene village in the Omuthiya area.

Police reports claim that the child was found stuck under a donkey cart at his neighbor’s house, where he was playing with another five-year-old mate.

The two minors were playing under a tree where a donkey tied to a loaded cart was stabled.

It seems the child had crept under the donkey during playing sessions with his friend.

While underneath the donkey, the animal somehow moved irritably, causing the luggage on its cart to fall and crash onto the minor below.

His friend then rushed to call for help but when people arrived at the scene, the unfortunate boy had already died.

In another incident, a woman is suing the Ministry of Health in Namibia after her mentally challenged son was killed inside the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.

The woman, Maria Alweendo, is suing the Ministry of Health and Social Services for 10 Namibian dollars after her son, Karel Ndakolo aged 16, was murdered by another mentally ill patient while admitted to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital in November 2023.

Court documents filed by Kadhila Amoomo Legal Practitioners indicate that on 20 October 2023, the plaintiff (Alweendo) took the deceased, who was a minor at the time, to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, seeking treatment for suspected mental health issues.

The deceased was subsequently admitted to Ward 16 of the hospital, where he was attacked by a deranged patient.

The lawyers representing the lady say the plaintiff entrusted the defendant (the Health Ministry) with the duty to provide her minor son with a safe and supportive environment conducive to his recovery.

However, this trust was gravely breached, resulting in the wrongful and untimely death of the plaintiff’s son.

“The plaintiff’s late minor son was an outstanding pupil at Nehale Senior Secondary School, Oshikoto Region, where he was completing his Grade 10 at the time of his passing. It is evident that the deceased had a promising future, which was tragically cut short as a direct result of the defendant’s negligence,” the lawyers said.
