The legendary Tour d’Afrique global cycling event, rides again from August 2025.
Participants are expected to cover a distance of 6300 Kilometers, from Cape Town to Kilimanjaro.
Well, at least, from the south-most point of Africa, to the foot of the continent’s highest peak.
Starting from next August and winding up after nearly four months in November 2025, the riders will spend a total of 52 cycling days between the south-most tip of Africa to the base of the continent’s highest peak.
Of course the tour will be punctuated with a total of 14 resting days in between the rides.
According to the organizers, the cyclists will enjoy two nights in hotels and 65 nights of camping.
On the 30th of August 2025, riders will be cycling from the foot of Table Mountain at Cape Town in South Africa, onto Namibia, then Botswana, later Zambia, crossing to Malawi and finally Tanzania.
In Tanzania the entourage rides across the country to the Northern Town of Moshi at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, where the expedition gets to climax on November 3, 2025.
The tour requires riders with mountain or touring bikes equipped with one set of 35-40c tires and one set of 45-50c tires
Now for the real expedition, from Cape Town the riders will peddle towards the Cederberg Mountains known for their exceptional botanical diversity which at this time of the year is laden with the scent of orange blossom.
From there the cyclists will continue onward across the Senqu River into Namibia.
This sparsely populated country is full of wide-open spaces and night skies bursting with stars as you have never seen before.
After a stop at one of the world’s largest sand dunes at Sossusvlei, the riders will continue northeast through the Namib Desert pastthe quiver trees and grazing impala – reaching Windhoek, Namibia’s modern capital, a few days later.
From there they head across the border into the vast expanse of Botswana, riding along the edges of the Kalahari Desert reaching Maun, the gateway to the renowned Okavango Delta and an opportunity to take a one-day safari or a flight over the delta.
Continuing, elephant sightings are common as are the unmistakable baobab trees.
In Kasane, there is a chance to take the Chobe River safari to see even more wildlife.
Then on to the mighty Victoria Falls just over the border in Zambia and some days for rest and off-bike adventures.
Onward, the cyclists pedal along the Great East Road to the bustling capital of Lusaka and then crossing the Luangwa River and reaching Malawi and its capital Lilongwe.
From Lilongwe the riders turn north and ride alongside Lake Nyasa (Or Lake Malawi), before climbing into Tanzania.
Cyclists will be challenged by the terrain through central Tanzania but eventually get rewarded with lush green forests and red dirt roads.
Now into the final few days, riders on this tour will inaugurate a new route on the Tour d’Afrique to Lake Manyara National Park and eventually to Moshi.
Moshi Municipality is the headquarters of Kilimanjaro Region in Northern Tanzania.
The town is located right below the towering Mount Kilimanjaro, the roof of Africa, where the 2025 expedition concludes its grand voyage of east and southern Africa.
