Another plane Crash: What is ailing Kenya’s military aircraft?

Questions are being raised regarding the safety and handling of military aircraft in Kenya that of late have been susceptible to crashing.

On Saturday, June 14, 2025 two Kenya Air Force pilots were killed on the spot after being involved in a plane crash in Viramboni village, Ndavaya, Kwale County.

Reports from the scene of the accident are to the effect that the aircraft, a Grob 120A model, experienced an emergency while on a training flight around midday, leading to the tragic crash.

“Earlier today, 14th June 2025, a Kenya Air Force Grob 120A aircraft experienced an emergency while on a training flight in the general area of Mwakijembe Primary School, Ndavaya, Kwale County. On Board were two pilots. Recovery is ongoing,” the Kenya Defence Forces said in a statement.

Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde has confirmed the incident, adding that investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

The accident in Kenya was reported on the third day after the Air India flight fell from the sky and killed at least 270 people in Gujarat state.

Following the plane accident in Kenya, emergency response teams, including Kenya Airforce (KAF) crash investigators, were sent to the scene for search and recovery operations.

In April 2024, General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (CDF), was killed when his helicopter went down shortly after take-off in a remote area of north-western Kenya.

That and a series of other army plane accidents that have occured in the past, are raising concern among Kenyans regarding the military aircraft safety.
