A Burning Coal Truck at Kitonga Hill blocks Southern Route

The Southern Route is blocked as a coal truck erupts in flames in Kilolo.

A Semi-trailer truck is erupting in flames at this moment, on the hilly road section of Kitonga in the Kilolo District of Iringa Region.

The Scania Lorry, according to reports, was carrying bags of charcoal and it seems the cargo is what caused the fire in the first place.

The road is thus blocked due to the fact that the truck is at the center of the highway and the thick clouds of smoke seem to be blocking sight of other road users.

Kitonga area is usually billed to be an accident prone area due to its dangerously winding road snaking around a steep hill, plus the number of vehicle crashes occurring along the section frequently.

The road is also very narrow which means with the burning truck at the center, coupled with bags of charcoal offloaded on the ground, the passage is essentially blocked to other vehicles using the route.

The main highway passing through Kitonga connects to Southern Regions of Njombe, Mbeya, Songwe, Ruvuma and Neighboring countries of Zambia and Malawi.

It is also the busiest road in Tanzania, handling thousands of mostly heavy-duty trucks and large buses traversing between the Southern Highlands of Tanzania and mostly Dar-es-salaam, Dodoma and Mwanza.
