The U.S Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has been rather busy meeting and holding talks with a number of African leaders recently and hatching new agreements with them.
Landau held meetings with Presidents of Senegal, Gabon, Liberia and Mauritania.
To start with, the Deputy Secretary of State, Landau met with Senegalese President Bassirou Faye and the two discussed increasing the prosperity of both countries by fostering U.S. trade and investment in Senegal.
The Deputy Secretary and President Faye also discussed, among other things, their shared commitment to countering terrorism and addressing the security situation in the Sahel.
In yet another development, the Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met and held talks with Liberian President Joseph Boakai during a meeting held in Washington.
Landau and Boakai discussed potential avenues to promote United States and Liberian commercial projects for mining, small business development, and other private enterprise opportunities.
Deputy Secretary Landau also lauded the recently hatched important agreement to increase multi-user access to Liberia’s railway to further facilitate economic development for the benefit of both countries.
In addition, the Deputy Secretary of State welcomed Liberia’s presence on the United Nations Security Council for its 2026-2027 term and both leaders committed to working together on shared interests of both nations.
Later, the U.S Deputy Secretary held another meeting in Washington with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.
Deputy Secretary Landau and President Ghazouani discussed the benefits of Mauritania partnering with the United States’ private sector to advance prosperity in both countries. They also discussed regional security in the Sahel.
Afterwards the Deputy Secretary of State Landau held talks with Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
Both the U.S Deputy Secretary Landau and Gabonese President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed joint commitments to deepen commercial and economic ties, advance infrastructure, and pursue security cooperation. Both leaders agreed to take concrete steps to expand the bilateral relationship moving forward.
