The Ngorongoro Conservation Area famous for its wildlife filled crater has managed to reclaim the title of Africa’s leading Tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards Gala Ceremony held in Dar-Es-salaam.
Ngorongoro, which is home to the only Geopark in the Sub-Saharan African Region, had won the trophy in 2023, but during the 2024 World Travel Awards the Conservation Area had lost the crown to the Kilimanjaro National Park.
Located in Arusha Region, Ngorongoro is also the one and only conservation area in Tanzania.
During the 32nd World Travel Awards Gala Ceremony for Africa and the Indian Ocean, Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) grabbed back the prestigious title.
It was among the many accolades that Tanzania managed to bag during the tourism event.
South Africa’s which had the highest number of entries in the category walked out empty handed despite fielding the Table Mountain, of Cape Town, which previously won the title several times, the Historical Robben Island, Cape Town’s waterfront harbour and beaches as well as the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway.
Kilimanjaro National Park won Africa’s leading tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards for the first time in 2013, taking over from the Pyramids of Gizza.
The Pyramids of Egypt won the category for the first and last time in 2012. This was when the World Travel Awards were initially established. After that, the Giza Pyramids disappeared from the top listing.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak located in the Moshi District of Tanzania, went on to win the title for four consecutive years in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 before losing it to South Africa’s Table Mountain in 2019.
The Table Mountain of Cape Town, South Africa, again managed to maintain the top WTA position for four consecutive years until 2023 when the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania won it for the very first time. Kilimanjaro reclaimed this title in 2024.
In 2025 however, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area managed to grab back the top Africa’s leading tourist attraction title at the World Travel Awards after taking one year hiatus.
