An accident involving two trains belonging to the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority has claimed yet another life.
Apparently, a train driver was killed when the locomotive engine he was controlling crashed onto a derailed passenger train wagon which it was sent to salvage along a rail section in Zambia.
The deceased, Davy Siwale, who was an employee of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority, was killed on the spot while 30 other people, mostly the passengers in the derailed wagon, suffered serious injuries.
According to the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) the accident occurred along the railway line between Mununga and Kalonje in the evening of June 12, 2025.
“TAZARA deeply regrets to announce a tragic train accident which occurred at approximately 16:00 hours, involving a rescue train dispatched to respond to an earlier derailment,” read the statement from the railway authority.
The train crash happened along the TAZARA line between Mununga and Kalonje at the milestone marked kilometre 1513 in Zambia.
It was during the rescue operations for the derailed TAZARA coach of Mukuba Passenger Train Number M22, which had been previously reported on June 11, 2025.
The rescue train number 611, which was deployed to the scene for salvaging the derailed wagon somehow also lost control and rammed onto the affected coach.
As a result of this tragic sequence of events, one TAZARA employee, Mr. Davy Siwale, lost his life and 30 people sustained injuries, among them 10 other railway employees and 19 passengers.
The injured victims were rushed to Mpumba Rural Health Centre for medical treatment.
Reports from Zambia say, some of the injured persons have already been discharged.
The TAZARA Regional General Manager for Zambia Kambani Ndhlovu, led a team of his staff in visiting the accident scene and affected victims saying his office has already taken all the necessary measures to support the victims and their families during this difficult time.
According to the TAZARA management, a full investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
A few weeks ago, two other TAZARA trains were involved in an accident which claimed the lives of two drivers.
