Libya is building the largest airport in Africa at Ajdabiya

Libya is building what the country envisages to be the largest airport in Africa, albeit North of the Continent.

At the moment, heavy construction machinery has begun arriving in the city of Ajdabiya to kick off the development of the proposed ‘Al Musheer International Airport,’ set to become the largest terminal in the region, according to official sources from Tripoli.

Ajdabiya, is a city which is strategically positioned in eastern Libya about 180 kilometers west of Benghazi.

The City is the birthplace of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and holds significant geographic value for the North African countries.

Ajdabiya serves as a vital junction linking eastern Libya to its vast southern expanse, with a nearly 1,000 kilometers stretch of road extending from the city to the borderline separating Libya with Chad, Sudan, and Egypt.

This new international airport is expected to transform Ajdabia into a major airfreight gateway between Africa and the rest of the world, much like how the corresponding Sirte is being developed into a global seaport free zone for maritime trade.

The government of Eastern Libya has also launched special projects entailing the renovation of important infrastructure, including the construction of key transport roads between the East and South regions to improve mobility, trade, and security.

The anticipated launch of the new ‘Al Musheer Airport,’ on the other hand, signals a bold step toward regional integration, economic expansion, and infrastructure modernization, aligning with broader efforts to re-establish Libya’s role as a strategic portal linking various continents from Africa.

Al Musheer International Airport project not only underscores Ajdabia’s growing importance, but also reflects the country’s Eastern administration long-term vision to reposition Libya as a central logistics and trade hub across Africa and the Mediterranean.

Now regarded as a ‘City,’ Ajdabiya is essentially a town in and the capital of the Al Wahat District in north eastern Libya.

The urban center is located some 150 kilometres south of Benghazi.

From 2001 to 2007 Ajdabiya was part of and capital of the Ajdabiya District.

The town is divided into three Basic People’s Congresses: North Ajdabiya, West Ajdabiya and East Ajdabiya
