Another opposition leader in Tanzania ambushed at Dar-es-Salaam Airport while traveling to Brussels

The Deputy Secretary General of the main opposition party in Tanzania was waylaid by the police at the Julius Kambarage Nyerere International Airport as he was preparing to travel to Brussels and got beaten up.

Amani Golugwa, the high-ranking official for the Chama Cha Democrasia na Maendelo (CHADEMA) the opposition party currently being hounded by state organs, was arrested at the Dar-es-salaam terminal and the cops prevented him from traveling to Belgium for reasons nobody in his entourage could understand.

According to reports from CHADEMA, the opposition party, their Deputy Secretary General, Amani was traveling abroad to represent them in the International Democracy Union (IDU) Conference and Forum, taking place in Brussels between May 14 and 15.

The IDU Forum 2025 taking place in Brussels is described to be a crucial platform for addressing global challenges, strengthening international cooperation, and reinforcing the values that unite the democratic centre-right.

Each year, the International Democracy Union hosts two flagship IDU Forums.

The marquee IDU Forum in Washington, D.C., and a regionally focused Forum that rotates locations.

This year’s International Democracy Union (IDU) Forum in Brussels, according to organizers, was to continue the tradition of high-level engagement, allowing participants to connect with global leaders and contribute to shaping the centre-right movement worldwide.

The Police in Dar-es-salaam have admitted to arresting Amani Golugwa, preventing him from representing Tanzania in the important IDU forum in Belgium.

As far as the Police Statement is concerned, the CHADEMA Deputy Secretary General has been traveling in and out of the country frequently, something which they believe is of much concern.

On the other hand, the International Democracy Union has strongly condemned what the IDU described to be unlawful arrest and assault of CHADEMA official En-route to their Forum inBelgium.

“Silencing the opposition voices violates the core of democracy. We call for his immediate release!”

The International Democracy Union has also called upon the global communities to exert more pressure on Tanzania, to force the country to uphold human rights.
