Zambia teams may play national fixtures in Tanzania after Irate Fans Vandalize Ndola Stadium

The Levy Mwanawasa Stadium which is the only sporting facility certified to host the Confederation of African Football-sanctioned international matches in Zambia, has been badly vandalized.

If the stadium doesn’t get repaired in time Zambia’s national teams will now be forced to play their home fixtures in neighboring countries, such as Tanzania.

Destruction at the sporting arena located in Ndola, occurred when chaos erupted at the stadium, when irate soccer fans went berserk following what was being claimed to be a controversial penalty decision.

The Levy Mwanawasa Stadium thus descended into chaos on Easter Sunday after the Power Dynamos soccer team was awarded a stoppage-time penalty, resulting in a 1-1 draw against rivals Nkana Football Club.

The decision sparked outrage among some fans, leading to acts of vandalism within the CAF certified stadium.

Although a few arrests were made, witnesses described the condition at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium as “total chaos.”

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has yet to issue an official statement but the authorities are expected to respond to the situation soon.

To make matters worse, the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium is currently the only facility in Zambia which is certified to host CAF-sanctioned international matches.

Observers worry that if repairs are not completed in time, the Zambian national teams will be forced to play their home fixtures in neighboring countries, such as Tanzania located North of the border.

The Levy Mwanawasa Stadium is a multi-purpose sporting venue based in Ndola, Zambia.

The stadium is the home ground for the Zambian professional football club, the ZESCO United and also used mostly for football matches for other Ndola-based clubs like Forest Rangers and Buildcon Football Clubs.

Located along the T3 road at the start of the Ndola-Kitwe Dual Highway, the Levy Mwanawasa stadium has a capacity of 49,800 people.

The first international game which was staged at the stadium was held on 9 June 2012.

The match was a world cup qualifier between the host nation team of Zambia playing against Ghana which had a result of 1–0 in favor of the Ndola squad.

The stadium was named after Levy Mwanawasa, the third President of Zambia, who served for six years from 2002 until his death in 2008.
