Gas powered coaches from Brazil will now start moving the residents of Dar-es-Salaam in the forthcoming new phase of Bus Rapid Transport in the city.
Tanzania is set to enhance its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project with the introduction of a new fleet of gas-propelled buses manufactured by Marcopolo in Brazil and powered by Scania engines from Sweden.
A number of such vehicles have just been delivered in the country.
Until now the Dar Bus Rapid Transport was being served by the Chinese bus company, Golden Dragon, which however still delivered equipment to the firm.
Scania Tanzania, the country’s largest supplier of heavy-duty vehicles, the modern buses are designed specifically for the needs of Tanzania and aim to revolutionize the public transport system in Dar es Salaam, the nation’s commercial hub.

The Bus Rapid Transport project is a key part of Tanzania’s broader infrastructure improvement initiative, intended to provide residents with a faster, safer, and more reliable mode of transportation.
As anticipation builds around the arrival of the new buses, the construction of BRT infrastructure in the city is making significant progress, in fact it has been completed in most parts with major roadworks and bus stops in place.
Funding for this transformative project has been secured from the World Bank under the Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Improvement Project (DUTP).
A substantial portion of these funds is allocated for Phase 3 of the BRT infrastructure, covering 23.33 kilometers of roadworks, which will enhance the overall efficiency of the public transport system.
Marcopolo S.A., the Brazilian company responsible for manufacturing the buses, brings over 70 years of expertise in bus body manufacturing and is recognized for its commitment to quality and sustainability.
The introduction of these state-of-the-art buses is expected to significantly impact urban mobility in Dar es Salaam, setting a new standard for public transport in Tanzania as well as ensuring cleaner operations for the sake of the environment.
