Mauritania to benefit from United States energy boost through Millennium Challenge

The United States and the Republic of Mauritania have signed an Agreement to Enhance Power Sector Resilience and Climate Adaptation in the country which is mostly a desert.

The United States of America and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania have jointly hatched a landmark USD 27 million Millennium Challenge Corporation Threshold Program agreement.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Mauritanian government designed the threshold program to build Nouakchott’s capacity in inclusive power sector planning, grid operations, and electricity regulation.

An official statement reveals that the MCC Threshold Program will provide debt-free grants to develop fundable environment resilience projects and to incorporate climate change and social considerations into the environmental impact assessment process.

According to the U.S Department of State, the Threshold Program represents a critical step in the United States’ ongoing partnership with Mauritania.

“By enhancing the power sector and improving environment adaptation, the program will contribute to Mauritania’s long-term economic prosperity and environmental sustainability.”

This significant United States government investment will support the development of critical infrastructure, attract greater private sector investment and as far as Washington is concerned, create prosperity for the people of Mauritania.

“The United States remains committed to supporting Mauritania’s efforts to foster inclusive growth and build a resilient future for its people.  We look forward to working closely with our Mauritanian partners to implement this program and achieve meaningful progress in these vital areas,” says the department of state.

Mauritania, is a sovereign country in Northwest Africa which is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest.

By size Mauritania is ranked the eleventh largest country in Africa and 28th largest in the world, though 90 percent of its land area is the Sahara Desert.
