Adani Group eyes Electricity Project in Tanzania amid controversies surrounding its Airport deal in Kenya

Tanzania is in talks with the Indian multinational conglomerate, Adani Group to establish a joint project of building high-voltage electricity power lines in the East African Country.

This will reportedly be a USD 900 million public-private collaboration venture, according to official sources.

David Kafulila, the executive director of Tanzania’s Public-Private Partnership Centre was quoted as saying that the Adani Group has indicated interest in the country’s energy segment.

The development comes at the time when controversy covers Adani’s projected interest to operate the Nairobi-based, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the neighbouring country of Kenya.

On the other hand, Tanzania is also in talks with Gridworks Development Partners LLP which is a company based in the United Kingdom (UK) over another USD 300 million power-line project through what is again being described to be a public-private partnership.

Gautam Adani, an Indian billionaire, seems to be expanding his company’s tentacles in the East African Region by investing in both Tanzania and the neighbouring Kenya.

In May, 2024 Tanzania awarded Adani Group a 30-year concession to run the major container terminal at the Dar es Salaam’s port.

But other than the controversial airport deal, Adani is in talks with Kenya’s electrical transmission utility about another USD 736 million concession to build high-voltage power lines in the country.

Meanwhile protests, Senate hearings, and lawsuits have followed the group’s bid to run the Jomo Kenyatta International air terminal in the outskirts of Nairobi, the country’s capital city.

Experts say Tanzania is slowly but surely developing to become a new economic centre in East Africa in recent years.

The country is also quickly becoming a popular destination for international investors.

Tanzania is located on a strategic location and with the country’s booming economy and ample natural resources, all contribute in providing enormous growth potential.

Headquartered in Ahmedabad and founded by Gautam Adani in 1988, Adani Group started out as a commodity trading business.,

At the moment the Group’s businesses include sea and airport management, electricity generation and transmission, mining, natural gas, food, weapons as well as infrastructure.

It is however being reported that more than 60 percent of Adani Group’s revenue is derived from coal-related businesses.
